MARKET DAYS ARE HERE AGAIN!

As the weather changes and winter bids us adieu, we welcome the wonderful atmosphere and offerings of our local farmers market. In our neck of the woods we are incredibly fortunate that we have the markets until December, so we don’t have to go long without enjoying locally grown produce, honey and other goods. However there is just something about the first markets of spring that are incredibly magical and are not to miss.

Until summer rolls around, our local farmers market only runs on weekends. So its a wonderful activity to partake in if I have a Saturday or Sunday off. Its rare in my profession, but anytime that these two things line up, you have to make the most of the experience.

The market closest to me is only open from 11-5pm so its important to make it out there early to get your pick of the best produce. Its nice arriving just as the booths are setting up, taking in the atmosphere and enjoying some food and other treats as food trucks are a staple at most markets in our area.

I usually spend about two hours at the market, unless there are other events like live music or I am with a group. I love to fill my bag with in season produce and local honey for baking. Depending on the day you can get things like bread, knitted goods and locally brewed craft beer.

Today I walked away with several loaves of bread and some local honey, which were amazing! I also grabbed some arugula, tomatoes and cucumbers that I will make into a wonderful arugula chicken salad for dinner tonight (recipe forthcoming). While I won’t be able to make it out every weekend, I look forward to warmer weather and the coming of fresh watermelons, peaches and plums. But also, to good eats, good friends and fun in the sun.
